PERIOPERATIVE BLOOD MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGIST EXAMINATION

Eligibility Criteria

The criteria for application to take the PBMT Examination are as follows:

1. The applicant must fulfill one of the following criteria:

a. The applicant must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; or

b. Be practicing in the field of blood management for a minimum of two (2) years completing a yearly minimum of fifty (50) autotransfusion procedures (those involving an semiautomatic cell processing/washing device) with a total of one-hundred (100) procedures, with evidence thereof.

c. Acceptable evidence is a notarized document listing the clinical location (hospital name and address), procedure type, date performed. This document needs to be signed by a supervisor knowledgeable of individual's involvement and of the clinical requirements for autotransfusion.

d. All those holding a professional license or certification in an associated blood management field (i.e. Physician, Nurse, Perfusionist, Laboratory Technologist, with process experience of at least fifty (50) procedures, need only to submit evidence of the credential, and list of procedures performed.

e. The applicant must have submitted a completed application for examination on file with the IBBM office by 21 days (3 weeks) prior to the date of examination.

f. If previously certified by the IBBM, and the certification has elapsed, a new application for examination on file by March 1st of the year for certification, if the individual did not submit a request to go on Inactive Status.

 2. Applicants for the examination must submit the following to the IBBM National Office  by 21 days  (3 weeks) prior to the examination.

a. A copy of your diploma or transcript from a high school, or equivalency program,
indicating date of graduation, or verification from employer of HS graduation. Those possessing advanced degree (AAS, BS, MS, PhD, ...) may submit transcripts from higher educational settings in lieu of a high school transcript; or
b. A written statement from an employer stating that the applicant is practicing
in the field of blood management and has completed a minimum of  fifty
(50) autotransfusion procedures (those involving an semiautomatic cell
processing/washing device) with evidence thereof in the calendar year prior to
application or the year of application.
