RECERTIFICATION

All certified PBMTs must complete the recertification process on an annual basis. Recertification is intended to declare to the public that the certified PBMT continues to meet standards of current knowledge in the field through continuing education and clinical activity.

Recertification contains two components:

1. Clinical activity (reported every year)

2. Continuing Education (reported every third year)

Clinical Activity Requirement

Each Certified PBMT is required to perform a minimum of fifty (50) clinical activities annually. A clinical activity is defined as an autotransfusion procedure defined as a clinical blood management application, performed in congruence with a surgical case in the operative or perioperative period, that involves an semiautomatic cell-processing and washing device.

Students in an accredited educational program that contains an autotransfusion segment in the accrediting agencies (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or similar organization) Standards and Guidelines for their profession, may also receive credit toward certification eligibility for the a case performed by a Certified PBMT.

Clinical Activity Report

Each Certified PBMT must file an annual Clinical Activity Report, which contains the following:

1. Procedure Type

2. Institution where performed with hospital or clinic name, city and state

3. Authorizaiton for Release of Information form.

4. Recertification fee of $100.00 USD

Report forms for the Clinical Activity Report are available on the IBBM website: www.intbbm.org.

All Clinical Activity Reports are due on January 1st of the year following the activity period and with procedures completed during the calendar year preceding January 1st.

The first Clinical Activity Report for a newly certified PBMT is due January 1st of the year following certification.

The Certified PBMT must sign the Clinical Activity Report. Signing of the Authorization for Release of Information form provides the IBBM with permission to check the accuracy of clinical activity.

The recertification reports may be faxed to 570-614-2205 or delivered by Certified Mail (Return Receipt Requested) to the IBBM National Office.

Audit of Clinical Activity

The IBBM may conduct an audit to insure the accuracy of the Clinical Activity Report

Audits will be conducted by contacting either the Department Chief, Operating Room Director or other designated hospital authority, to complete the audit process.

Each certified PBMT is to list a designated hospital authority (I.E. Department Chief, Operating Room Director, …) for each hospital where clinical procedures are reported.  Addresses and contact information, including a valid e-mail address, for the designated hospital authority at each hospital listed on the form must be provided.

In the event that the designated authority cannot verify the cases submitted on the Clinical Activity Report, the PBMT will be contacted to provide verification of the cases and explain discrepancies.  The PBMT is responsible for the accuracy of the information contained on the report and to provide verification of the clinical procedures.

Continuing Medical Education Activity Requirement

During each three (3) year reporting period every Certified PBMT must earn thirty (30) Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. A minimum of ten (10) CME credits must be earned by attending educational venues on blood management (see summary of recertification activity).

Recertification will be dependent upon completing all forms and submission of a yearly certification fee. The yearly certification fee is $100.00 USD.

Continuing Medical Education Activity Report

Each Certified PBMT must file a Continuing Medical Education Activity Report every three (3) years documenting clinical activity. Each year the certified PBMT must submit a Clinical Activity report including the third year. The Continuing Medical Education Activity Report must contain the following:

1. Documentation of continuing medical education requirements. One Continuing Medical Educational credit is defined as sixty (60) minutes spent in an organized, structured learning experience, such as a blood management meeting, on-line educational course, or similar venue.

2. Documentation of fifty (50) autotransfusion procedures

(those involving an automatic cell processing/washing device).

3. A yearly certification fee of $100.00 USD.

Activity report forms  are available on the IBBM website at www.intbbm.org.  Recertification reports may also be submitted by fax 570-614-2205 or  Certified Mail by mailing to the IBBM Office at:

International Board of Blood Management

20 Spyglass Hill Road

Bloomsburg, PA 17815

The period covered in a Continuing Medical Education Activity Report is from January 1st through December 31st three years later.

Recertification Filing Deadline

All reporting periods end on December 31st. All reports must be completed and mailed or filed online with the appropriate fee no later than January 31st of the year following the recertification year.

Late Fees

Certified PBMTs filing recertification reports after January 31st will be assessed a late fee of $50.00.

Loss of Certification

A PBMT will lose certification if:

1. All requirements stated above are not followed.

2. False information is filed on any part of the examination or recertification process.

Appeals for Loss of Recertification

In the event of loss of certification and individual has the right to appeal the ruling. The appeal should be submitted in writing to the IBBM stating the following:

1. Full name and address of individuals

2. Certification certificate number

3. Reason for the appeal limited to 200 words or less

4. Supporting documentation

The IBBM shall be the final determiner of the decision and shall act according to the IBBM Bylaws.

Recertification Notification

Upon receipt of all forms for recertification and the recertification fee, a new time-dated certification certificate will be issued. The original certificate number will be maintained and the certification will be valid for three years commencing from January 1st of the year following the completion of all criteria for recertification.

Inactive Status

At times a PBMT may be unable to maintain certification because of a lack of clinical activity. For this reason, and because many individuals wish to maintain an acknowledgment of having been certified, an Inactive Status may be requested. Individuals on Inactive Status will receive all e-mail distributions from the IBBM. The mechanism for obtaining Inactive Status is as follows:

1. After receipt from the IBBM National Office that certification has

lapsed, the individual may request to be placed in the Inactive Status. An individual may stay in the Inactive Status category for a period of two years.

2. Within that two-year period if the individual becomes clinically active and wishes to again use the title of PBMT, they must submit to the IBBM national office a list of procedures performed. There must be a minimum of fifty (50) procedures for each year of clinical inactivity. Example: If the individual was clinically inactive for the full two (2) years, they would not be eligible for recertification until one hundred (100) procedures were performed

when again active.

3. Submit a reinstatement fee of $50.00 along with the clinical activity list.

4. Submit a recertification fee of $100.00 for annual recertification.

5. At the end of two years of clinical inactivity, it will be necessary to initiate the certification process, completing all criteria, in order to again become actively certified as a PBMT (as documented by the last clinical procedureperformed).

Taking the Examination a Second Time

Applicants retaking the Perioperative Blood Management Technologist Examination are NOT required to resubmit a fifty (50) case summary. An application fee of $200.00 USD must be submitted along with the new application for examination.

Change of Address

It is the responsibility of the PBMT to notify the IBBM National Office of change of either email address, or physical address. The individual must contact the National Office, either by e-mail or via regular mail, within five (5) days of the change. Acknowledgement of the change of address will be via e-mail sent to the individual providing notification that this change has become effective.  Failure to do so may cause loss of certification.
